Urban Question

Can the multiple sites Department of Sanitation uses along the west side and within the Hudson River Park be consolidated into one municipally owned building?

Urban Answer

It is feasible to improve conditions for all DOS functions and set a standard for public work that meets a variety of needs beyond waste transfer for all communities on the west side of Manhattan.

In the past, public work was the mainstay of pride in a community Pier 76 is envisioned as a new generation of integrating infrastructure and community to benifit all neighbors and maintain responsibility for their infrastructure requirements.

Multiple Improvement Examples:

1.  Through grade integration* the Highline can connect t o the west side ferry terminal without brining pedestrians to grade to cross the highway. *(see grand concourse case study for more on grade separation)

2.  By programming public space and including a learning center describing the industrial aspects of the site makes the infrastructure transparent instead of hidden. We all love to see how the city works.

3.  Bringing a sustainable plan for importing / exporting materials by water we well as moving garbage solves multiple infrastructure needs on Manhattan's west side.
