Urban Question

How can the Battery Park City South Neighborhood, already disconnected by West Street from lower Manhattan (destroyed post 9/11) connect utilities and people to transit, Wall Street, Subways and Busses without interfering with the WTC reconstruction and truck movements at grade?

Urban Answer

The bridge was built within 9 months and ensured that this pedestrian bridge, although assembled within 9 months with 2 box trusses, reflected a sense of pride and ‘high-design’ as the first piece of infrastructure built downtown post 9/11. Responsibilities included oordination of the Community Board, City and State Departments of Transportation, NYC Office of Emergency Management, Consolidated Edison, Battery Park City Authority and private property owners.
